How to Get Rid of a Possum In Your Garage

Possums (opossums) are nocturnal marsupials that sometimes find their way into garages seeking food and shelter. While generally harmless, they can make a mess.

Why Possums Enter Garages

  • Searching for food (pet food, garbage, fruit)
  • Seeking shelter from weather or predators
  • Attracted by the warmth
  • Easy access through open doors or gaps

Removal Steps

  1. Open the garage door at dusk — Possums are nocturnal and will leave to forage
  2. Remove food sources — Take away pet food, garbage, and any accessible food
  3. Create an exit path — Clear obstacles between the possum and the open door
  4. Use light and noise — Possums avoid bright, noisy environments
  5. Set a humane live trap — Bait with fruit and relocate

Prevention

  • Keep garage doors closed, especially at night
  • Remove outdoor pet food
  • Secure garbage cans with tight lids
  • Seal gaps and openings in the garage
  • Trim tree branches that overhang the garage
  • Install motion-activated lights
