How To Get Rid of Chipmunks In the Garage

Chipmunks are some of the cuter species of rodent out there, but if they take up residence in your garage, you'll want them out. They can damage stored items and leave droppings everywhere.

Signs of Chipmunks

  • Small droppings similar to mouse droppings
  • Chewed items and gnaw marks
  • Stored food caches (nuts, seeds, berries)
  • Burrow openings near the garage foundation
  • Chattering sounds

Humane Removal

  1. Open the garage door — Give them a clear exit path
  2. Remove food attractants — Bird seed, pet food, nuts
  3. Set live traps — Bait with sunflower seeds or peanut butter
  4. Use natural repellents — Cayenne pepper, predator urine
  5. Create noise deterrents — Radio or ultrasonic devices

Prevention

  • Seal all entry points and gaps
  • Remove bird feeders near the garage
  • Keep the garage clean and food-free
  • Trim bushes and ground cover near the foundation
  • Use L-shaped metal mesh along the foundation
  • Install hardware cloth over vents
