How to Get Rid of Rats In the Garage

If you use your garage for any sort of food storage, you are likely going to attract mice or rats at some point. Even without food, rats may decide your garage is perfect for nesting.

Signs of Rats

  • Droppings along walls and in corners
  • Gnaw marks on wood, wires, and plastic
  • Greasy rub marks along walls
  • Scratching noises, especially at night
  • Shredded materials for nesting

Elimination Methods

  1. Set snap traps — Most effective, place along walls
  2. Use bait stations — Tamper-resistant for safety
  3. Seal entry points — Rats can squeeze through a half-inch gap
  4. Remove food sources — Store everything in sealed metal or glass containers
  5. Eliminate water sources — Fix leaks and remove standing water
  6. Reduce clutter — Remove hiding spots and nesting materials

Prevention

  • Install door sweeps and weatherstripping
  • Use steel wool and caulk to seal gaps
  • Keep the garage clean and organized
  • Store garbage in sealed metal cans
  • Remove fallen fruit from nearby trees
  • Consider a cat (natural rat deterrent)
