How to Get Rid of Bats In Your Garage

Bats are beneficial for insect control, but having them roost in your garage creates mess and health concerns. Here's how to safely and humanely remove them.

Why Bats Choose Garages

  • Dark, quiet, undisturbed spaces
  • Warm roosting spots near the ceiling
  • Easy entry through gaps and vents
  • Proximity to insect food sources

Humane Removal Methods

  1. Wait until dusk — Bats leave at night to feed
  2. Open the garage door at sunset — Give them a clear exit
  3. Install a one-way exclusion device — Allows bats to leave but not re-enter
  4. Use bright lights — Bats prefer darkness and will avoid well-lit areas
  5. Use a fan — Airflow near roosting spots discourages bats

Important Notes

  • Many bat species are protected by law — check local regulations
  • Never handle bats directly (rabies risk)
  • Do not seal entry points while bats are still inside
  • Best time for exclusion is late summer to early fall
  • Avoid exclusion during maternity season (May-August)

Prevention

  • Seal all gaps larger than 3/8 inch
  • Install screens over vents and openings
  • Use caulk around window frames and siding joints
  • Keep garage doors closed at dusk
