How to Get Rid of a Snake in the Garage

Discovering a snake in your garage can be startling, but most snakes found in garages are non-venomous and more scared of you than you are of them.

Stay Calm

Most garage snakes are harmless species looking for mice, insects, or shelter. Don't try to kill the snake — they're beneficial for pest control.

Safe Removal Steps

  1. Identify the snake from a safe distance — If venomous, call animal control
  2. Open the garage door — Give the snake a clear exit path
  3. Leave the area — Most snakes will leave on their own when given space
  4. Use a broom — Gently guide the snake toward the open door from a distance
  5. Use a snake trap — Glue traps can catch snakes humanely (release with vegetable oil)

Prevention

  • Seal gaps under and around the garage door
  • Remove mouse and rat populations (snake food sources)
  • Keep the garage clean and clutter-free
  • Remove debris and woodpiles near the garage
  • Use snake repellent around the perimeter
  • Install door sweeps and weatherstripping
