How to Finish Bottom of Drywall In Garage

The bottom edge of drywall in a garage is vulnerable to moisture damage, impacts from vehicles and equipment, and general wear. Properly finishing it protects your walls and keeps your garage looking clean.

Why the Bottom Matters

  • Water can wick up from the floor
  • Vehicle doors can dent and damage the lower wall
  • Dirt and debris collect at the base
  • Pests can enter through gaps

Methods for Finishing

  1. Leave a gap and install baseboard — Keep drywall 1/2" above the floor and add a baseboard
  2. Use FRP panels — Fiberglass Reinforced Plastic panels are moisture-proof
  3. Install metal corner bead — Protects the bottom edge from impacts
  4. Apply a moisture barrier — Paint or seal the bottom edge
  5. Use PVC trim — Won't absorb moisture like wood

Best Practices

  • Always leave a small gap between drywall and floor
  • Use moisture-resistant drywall (green board) for the bottom row
  • Seal all joints and edges
  • Consider painting with a semi-gloss for easy cleaning
